Hospice to CAB?

As we get into 2011 it’s worth reporting that Basingstoke Camera Club have spread wings a little more by having some of our photographs displayed in the new offices of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, which are in the library. The prints are supplied by transferring the outgoing Hospice display to the CAB, where they are re-framed courtesy of the Newbury Building Society , who have provided the frames. Our thanks go to Lorraine Milford and Cath Farrow for their work in arranging this and maintaining the displays.

A couple of bits of sad news to tell you about.

Firstly we have heard that Jennie Pearson from Alton Camera Club has died after suffering a massive stroke. Many members of Basingstoke CC will remember Jennie, who was also a member of the DPS, and was one half of the organising team (with her partner Eric) of the annual DPS photo holiday.

And we have also been advised that Ian Bigg, from Blandford Forum, a member of the Southern Fed “A” list of judges, and who visited BCC several times, has passed away.

Our deepest sympathies go to both families.

FILE NAMING AND PRINT LABELLING

Unfortunately some members are not keeping to the guidelines for file naming and print labelling for competitions, which causes some difficulty for the competition secretaries. All members are reminded their competition entries should be labelled or named as laid down in the competition rules. These are available in your Programme booklet and also on the club website. The relevant sections are 4.1 for prints and 4.2 for digital.

The Forest Stewardship Council UK (FSC UK)

has launched a photographic competition to celebrate 2011 - The International Year of Forests. FSC UK is a registered charity dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. For full competition details please see our website http://www.fscuk.org/?page_id=1495.

Theme: We are looking for striking seasonal photos taken in an FSC forest or of an FSC product. To find your nearest FSC certified forest see our map at www.fsc-uk.org/ukforests. Your image could show a forest scene, the flora and fauna found in a forest, or a close up of your favourite FSC product. The deadline for the winter entries is March 31st so get snapping!

We hope that keen photographers across the UK will take part in our competition. We have some attractive prizes to offer, prizes will be awarded for each season in 2011 with a separate category for under 16’s.

If you would like to promote this competition to your students or camera club please do. Let me know if you would like any flyers, we will be printing a competition flyer very soon or can send a PDF of the competition details.

Photos can be submitted using Flickr or by email. Just send your photo along with your name, age and the FSC forest location or FSC product type to competitions@fsc-uk.org and we’ll add it to Flickr for you.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

In the interest of keeping members informed of what is going on “behind the scenes” it has been decided to publish a brief account of the matters discussed at committee meetings.

A committee meeting was held on Monday 31st Jan; the following is a summary of what was discussed:

• Job descriptions for all committee posts will be created to allow members access to the club functions and what each post involves

• It was decided to canvas the members as to the inclusion in the programme “Celebrity Lectures” which would require additional payment to attend, possibly on club evenings with open invitations to other clubs.

• It was suggested that on competition evenings all entries should be intermingled and judged as one group, but the leagues A & B would still work as normal when the results are assessed. This will enable us to split the evening’s workload better and all work will be judged on the same footing by the judge. This will be trialled in the last digital round.

• There are several committee members who wish to stand down at the end of the club year in May and replacements will be required.

• As no one appears to enter external exhibitions via the club, this committee post may be redundant.

• Some members are not labelling/file-naming their work correctly for competition and this causes extra work for the competition secretaries. A reminder will be published in the newsletters.
