Visit to Arundel Wetlands Centre

The Arundel Wetland Centre is part of The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust founded in 1946 by the late Sir Peter Scott. Its action plan includes restoring and saving threatened water birds and providing learning and enrichment for people who like being close to nature.

The weather on the trip down was gloomy and overcast. On arrival at the centre everyone had dressed appropriately with new and seasoned waterproofs on display. The rain persisted for most of the morning and little photography was achieved. At lunchtime some of the club members departed, damp and slightly dejected. However, it dried up in the afternoon and the sun came out. For the remainder of the group it was time to get some photographs!

There were many different wildfowl to visit all in specially designed habitat areas. The whole site was well designed and looked after. The group split up and went their separate ways, did some exploring and photography, then met up at the centre again. We chatted and discussed sightings and events. All had enjoyed the day and said they would like to visit again, in better weather. Thanks go to Sandra for organising the day.

George McCarthy’s talk last week left a few of us admiring his work, especially Brenda Taylor who writes:

'So many stunning images and good background information to go with them. A real pleasure to see his work and listen to the story that was behind some of them. Just glad George is not a member of the club or no one else would get a look in for the prizes and the top marks.”

Away match

The First round of the Southern Federation League Competition will be held at Overton Camera Club on Friday, November 27th.

Basingstoke will be up against Overton and the Disabled Photographers' Association. 8 prints and 8 Digital images, already selected by Len and Keith, will be judged against the same number form the other two clubs. There will be two more rounds, using the same photographs, at Basingstoke in January and at Andover in march.

For those of you who are totally bemused at to what this is all about, be patient, for I will dust off the explanation I produced a couple of years ago and put it in next month's newsletter. Meanwhile, I'm sure Len would be grateful of your support at this event. If you would like to go, please see him.

Best wishes, Cath

Another Alternative To The Pricey Photo Editing Software

Another imaging software package that’s come to our notice:

So, you’re a serious shooter— you photograph in RAW, you stay in the ProPhoto RGB color space for as much of your workflow as you can, and you calibrate your monitor biweekly. You want to do your color correction using Curves and Levels, and to mix your channels to go blackand- white. Think you have to shell out the big bucks for Adobe Photoshop to do all of that? Nope.

Digital Light & Color, a software company founded by Jonathan Sachs, who created the killer app Lotus 1-2-3, makes an under-the-radar program with a very devoted following: Picture Window 5.0. The PC-only Pro version ($90, direct from dl-c.com) packs an incredible number of tools into a surprisingly inexpensive piece of software. And Picture Window won’t hog your hard drive space. Technology - Future trends - an interesting article from the pro-world

David Kilpatrick finds camera makers trying to cram in video capture and ever more advanced in-camera features into smaller, lighter bodies. So why is he harking back to his five-year-old bridge camera for answers? Click here to read the full story
