Welcome to Basingstoke Camera Club March 2005
Well, we have survived the festive season and most of us are looking forward to the spring and summer. Spring is now just around the corner and already we are seeing the signs, if only if wasn’t so cold.
Still at least the Daffodils and spring flowers are starting to make an appearance, it can bring a little cheer, To the Cold wintery days.

Photography and the Calendar year.
Here is the second instalment in the calendar year:-
March
Britain and Europe are now entering the spring months. There are now loads to photograph besides the obvious. Spring flowers are now popping up everywhere and the days are starting to get longer.
A lot of the wildlife are starting to get a lot more active. If you are really lucky you may experience the badger cubs first outing into the world since the were born. Of course, you may have to get up pretty early to catch that. Hares are now becoming a lot more active and according to country lore , hares go mad in spring and leap about, chase each other and spar in pairs like boxers “Mad March Hares”.
If you are travelling to parts of Europe this March, look out for Eurasian Brown bears, as they start to surface after their long hibernation. During the winter Brown Bears give birth to their cubs. So this is a great opportunity to photograph them if you are lucky enough to find them. They can be found in 16 countries in Europe, Spain, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania and so on.
On sunny March days in Europes Heaths and scrub lands, the warmth stirs Adders, for those who fancy photographing Snakes.
Interesting Events & happenings
A few club members have emailed me a number of events and interesting happenings for this year. I thought I would include them in the newsletter, especially for those who may not have seen them or do not have email.
ArtSway is the contemporary visual arts venue in the New Forest. We show high quality contemporary arts including photography. Our next exhibition is Anne Hardy, a photographer from London, who has produced new work while in residency here at ArtSway. Her exciting images are amazing large scale photographs taken from life size sets, which she constructs. The results are striking photographs, which present fantasy or parallel worlds, but are very believable because of the use of recognizable materials. Connected to Anne Hardy's exhibition are photographic workshops: Adult Digital Photography workshop Saturday 12 March 11am-4pm A workshop with photographer Gina Dearden offering an opportunity to learn more about digital photography while responding to the exhibition. Cost £30

Landscapes in March:-
Conditions can be volatile and difficult to predict at this time of year, so be prepared for changeable, capricious weather. There can also be significant regional variations across the country, so follow the weather forecasts carefully but plan only one day at a time. (if you plan longer than this it becomes a gamble). The landscape is now awakening from its winter hibernation. Early flowering shrubs, emerging foliage and spring flowers can make attractive subjects. This is also convenient time for photographing as night falls. Brightly lit towns & cities photograph particularly well in the late afternoon/early evenings.
