Competition Rules

  • GENERAL RULES
  • All competition entries must carry the photographer’s name.
  • No photograph may be used more than once in each competition.
  • In the case of any dispute, the decision of the Committee is final.
  • All print entries are to be mounted (max. size 50x40cm including mount).
  • All print entries must have a Basingstoke Camera Club print label, or suitable alternative, affixed to the back of the mount.
  • All Prints must be submitted to the Competition Secretary by 7:50pm on the evening of the competition.
  • All Digital Images for projection must be prepared in accordance with rule 10.
  • All Digital Images must be submitted to the Competition Secretary at least one week before the competition date
  • Unless otherwise stated, entries may be home/trade processed or digitally produced and may be colour or monochrome.
  • The photographer must own the copyright to all entries to the competitions, regardless of the method of production.
  • The judge will be supplied with a copy of these rules and briefed on the evening of the event. The judges interpretations and decisions are final.
  • In the event of the judge not arriving by 8.20pm and if no substitute is available, competitions will be marked by the average of the marks given by three club members nominated by the members present, with the proviso that no judge shall mark his/her own work. In the event that three judges cannot be nominated, marking will be by all members present. Not valid for the “Set of Four Prints” or the “Common Image” competitions.
  • Unless otherwise stated entry to any of the competitions relies on the entrant being a fully paid up member of Basingstoke Camera Club.
  • Images submitted by members to Club competitions may be used for self-promotion of the Club for a period of five years or until they leave the Club, unless the member informs the Competition Secretary that they do not want their images used in this way
  • CLUB LEAGUE COMPETITIONS
  • These competitions are run on a league basis, with points between 1 and 10 being awarded for each photograph entered during the season. Entries may only be submitted to one of the classes in each category (Prints or Digital Images) by a member during the season.
  • The four leagues will be as follows:
  • Prints (A) Prints(B) Digital Images (A) Digital Images (B)
  • The winner of each of the classes will be the member with the highest aggregate score in the relevant class at the end of the season.
  • Up to 8 images may be entered in to each category (Prints or Digital Images) during the season of which all 8 scores will count towards the league table.
  • Each image (or one so similar to be mistaken for it) can only be entered into the club league competitions (Print or Digital Image) once. Images entered under rule 2j are exempt.
  • Each member may enter up to two prints and/or two Digital Images in each round.
  • If an entrant misses a round then (at the discretion of the Competition Secretary) they may enter 4 images in the next round, the scores of which will all count.
  • If the Competition Secretary has too many entries for any given round he has the discretion not to show some or all of the “missed entries” from a previous round.
  • An entrant who wins a class will normally be automatically promoted to the next higher class for the following season. This rule may be waived, at the discretion of the Committee.
  • New members who wish to enter the last two rounds for experience may do so. These entries will remain eligible for entry into the competitions the following season.
  • THE STORY MUG TROPHY
  • Each member may enter one story consisting of 5 to 8 Digital Images. There is to be no audio included.
  • All images must have their position in the sequence of projection clearly identified in the title: “story name_author name_position.jpg”
  • where: “Story name” is the title of the story.
  • “author name” is the entrants full name
  • “position” is the position in sequence eg. 1 2 3 etc.
  • SET SUBJECT COMPETITION
  • Set Subject competitions will be held for prints and digital images, with a choice of subjects proposed by those members present at the AGM.,
  • The subject(s) to be used will be decided by the committee.
  • Up to three photographs may be entered for each competition.
  • CLIFF DYBLE MEMORIAL TROPHY
  • Each entrant may enter a panel of three prints.
  • The panel will comprise one landscape, one human portrait and one free choice (which is not to be a landscape or human portrait).
  • Each entry will be judged as a panel with all three prints displayed together although there is no requirement for them all to be of the same subject or theme.
  • FRED ADNAMS MEMORIAL TROPHY
  • Each entrant may enter up to three Digital Images.
  • The subject of each Image will be British Nature or British Landscape in alternate years (see the current programme).
  • All Images must have been photographed within the British Isles.
  • Each Image will be judged individually.
  • PRINT AND DIGITAL IMAGE OF THE YEAR
  • This competition will be held early in September each year.
  • Only work entered in the previous season’s Club Competitions will be eligible to enter.
  • Each member may enter up to two prints and/or two Digital Images.
  • All work entered will be held back by the Committee and the Southern Federation League panel for the coming year may be selected from the entries plus any other work submitted for selection. Those not chosen will be returned to the photographer who entered them.
  • SET OF FOUR PRINTS
  • Each member may enter one panel (see rule 1l) which will consist of four prints. For this competition a panel is a selection of photographs exhibited together which are in some way linked.
  • The competition will be judged by the members present.
  • Each member has a maximum of 10 points that can be allocated to as many panels as they see fit (eg 10 points to one panel, 6 points to one panel and four to another, 1 point to ten panels etc.).
  • No member shall mark their own entry.
  • Common Image
  • Each member can enter 1 final print made from the Common Image as supplied each season by the Competition Secretary.
  • Each entrant will explain how the final print was arrived at from the original Common Image using intermediate prints as required.
  • Only prints can be used in this competition.
  • The Final print should be mounted in some way.
  • The competition will be judged by the members present.
  • Each member has a maximum of 10 points that can be allocated to as many prints as they see fit (eg 10 points to one print, 6 points to one print and four to another, 1 point to ten prints etc.).
  • No member shall mark their own entry.
  • DIGITAL IMAGES (FOR PROJECTION)
  • Each picture should be in a Digital File named in the following format:
  • “picture name_author name_competition.jpg”
  • where: “picture name” is the title of the picture
  • “author name” is the entrants full name
  • “competition” is the competition to which it is to be entered:
      • ‘Club League Competition’ Class A = A
      • ‘Club League Competition’ Class B = B
      • ‘Set Subject Competition’ = S
      • ‘Fred Adnams Competition’ = F
      • ‘Image of the Year Competition’ = Y
  • NOTE. See rule 3b for Images entered in the Story Mug Trophy.
  • All digital Files should be a maximum of 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high. Files that are smaller than these dimensions will be shown at their submitted pixel size.
  • The file should be;
  • 8 bit colour depth
  • sRGB embedded
  • JPG (jpeg encoded)
  • 72 ppi (this is not mandatory but can stop confusion)
  • The files can be supplied using any of the following;
  • USB Memory stick
  • Memory card (CF, SD, MMC, XD, Sony Memory Stick)
  • Data CD or DVD
  • Email
  • Every effort will be made to enter the files into the competition but the Competition Secretary reserves the right to refuse entry if the file is unreadable (due to corruption or other reason) in which case a replacement may be entered up to twenty four hours before the competition.
  • The club will not be responsible for any perceived shift in colour or distortion to the projected image.
